XCOM and XCOM2 managed to be a meaningful reboot of the X-com franchise of the 90s, using similar gameplay elements to create a similar experience. Is this some kind of curse of the 1990s? Not remotely. This is not a phenomenon entirely unique to Master of Orion 2 - a number of classics have fallen prey to this, notably Jagged Alliance, a game from 1999. A game from 1996 has yet to be recaptured. In others, just a few modern tweaks - realtime strategy, or removing the tactical combat minigame, or making ship customization happen on little fill-in grids, or tweaking the way in which planetary buildings are constructed. ![]() In some cases the game has been near-faithfully cloned, right down to menu layouts. There is a reason developers have been attempting to reconstruct it, and there is a reason they have consistently failed. MoO2, as it is known, is considered a genre masterpiece of 4x Space Strategy.
